Palahniuky is the nickname used by the three brothers – Yura, Mykola and Mykhailo Danyshchuk, authentic Hutsul muisicians from the village of Shepit. Their nickname derives from the Hutsul female name Palahna. The part of Shepit where the three brothers were born is also called Palahniuky. According to Yura Danyshchuk, a long time ago their family had an authoritative woman named Palahna who had many children. The extended family was big and its men were tough, dominating their part of the village. With time, the nickname of the family (roughly meaning “those descending from Palahna”) was applied to the area of the village settled by the extended family.
